Pygmy killer whale

Pygmy killer whale

On the 24th of Dec ’10, Ali Perkins was leading a group of tourists along 90 Mile Beach.  She found a ‘whale’ and requested help with identification. Ingrid Visser immediately realized that this animal was a pygmy killer whale (Feresa attenuata).  This was the first record for the species in NZ, so on the 31st of Dec Anton van Helden and Ingrid conducted a necropsy and boned out the skeleton for the Te Papa Museum
