Blue whales off OREC

Blue whales off OREC

Written by Leonie Mahlke

While we were working on some jobs at OREC, Ingrid suddenly screamed and started running through the house.  She spotted big blows in the far distance, right in front of Orca Central.  We drove to her neighbors house, which allowed us to have a better view above the sea.  Her former suggestions were right- we observed three blue whales making their way towards the horizon.  Soon a boat recognized the huge air and snotty fountains and followed them in an appropriate distance.  A few minutes later the Dive! Tutukaka vessels, which we had called earlier, arrived and gave us further information about the animals:  Apparently we were watching two adults and one juvenile whale.  They were travelling in a straight steady speed, shining blue through the surface.  Thanks to Kevin, a passenger on one of the Dive! Tutukaka vessels for providing us with some pictures.  Despite the 2-3 km’s that kept us apart, it was pretty unbelievable to see the largest animal on earth. If we only had a repaired boat ☺
