Orca in the Bay of Islands

Orca in the Bay of Islands

Written by Samantha Hale (from the USA)

I have been with the ORT for a little over a month now, and like many little girls I always dreamed of seeing orca.  After being with the ORT for just ten days we got a call that there were Orca in the Bay of Islands.  As this would be my first sighting of orca anywhere in the world, I was very excited!  Although the weather was less than perfect the experience was magic.  The animal we came upon was TJ, an adult male know for his stoic behavior.  Although he didn’t interact with the boat I had a hard time keeping my jaw shut and even think my heart may have stopped!  After a very short hour or so following TJ, he was maneouvering around so much that it was difficult to follow him.  To ensure that we didn’t harass him, the team decided to head home.  On the way back to the Research Center (with some pizza), we got a call that there were more orca coming south down the coast past the Center.  So, we set out some chairs on the lawn and watched as two pods swam by.  The show they put on for us was great!  Tail lobbing, half-breaching (and full breaching), pec slapping and similar.  I’m pretty sure I went to bed with stars in my eyes that night and now have realized just how easy it is to get the ‘orca bug’.
