World-Famous Punta Norte Orca

The orca of Punta Norte, Península Valdés, Argentina, are perhaps some of the most famous orca in the world – known for coming up onto the beach to take sealions.  Dr Visser first visted the area in the early 2000’s and watched this dramatic hunting behaviour.  Whilst there she met Juan Copello, the grandson of the founder of Estancia La Ernestina, which now hosts a boutique eco-hotel for wildlife enthusiast.  The elder Señor Copello donated land for what is now the famous ‘Punta Norte Reserve’ – where the public can watch the orca hunting from the cliff-tops.  Juan and Ingrid, along with some other colleagues founded Punta Norte Orca Research in 2004 and the research project continues to this day.   There are fewer than 30 orca who frequent this region and less than half of those who come onto the beach as part of their hunting strategy.  Learn more about them on the dedicated Punta Norte Orca Research website.
